Parenting has become more of a competition between kids’ parents and is beginning to consume the identity of both the institution and the society. Human Emotional Intelligence (HED)

While education may be seen as the most expensive, yet most effective form of “youth development,” the issue is how we teach the importance of emotional intelligence. HED is an understanding of the current state of one’s mental, physical, and emotional functioning and can be achieved by acknowledging the self as the source of all or most human emotions. Some aspects of HED are more important than others, and our high-tech environment has further driven evolution of the concept of HED.


Adolescence is a period in which children typically experience developmental changes associated with social emotional and behavioral changes (Emotional Intelligence baseline, Connected with Development, et al.). High levels of HED may be present in this period, but the motivation for emotion regulation and social behavior modification may be quite low. It can be challenging for a child with low HED to regulate his or her emotions to avoid behaviors associated with reduced confidence and a desire to disengage from society (Emotional Intelligence versus SMILE).


College is the ideal learning environment to introduce HED as well as develop the emotional nature of young adults. Students face many challenges and disorders along with learning to resolve them. Adults are at high risk of having similar emotions during their periods of adolescence as their kids who live for the now. As parents, we face similar challenges in trying to instill in our kids to control their emotions and learn how to cope with them. By these mechanisms, we identify with our kids and become aware of the differences in their emotions as well as encourage their well-being and emotional maturity.

In the workplace, emotional intelligence is one of the most valuable qualities. It is valued by both colleagues and customers in organizations around the world. Employers value and value this integral quality of a team. In the current competitive world, all employees, whether they are a college student or a CEO, want to understand their emotions in order to have a better working environment. The workplace might be the ideal learning environment for HED and HED therapy as well.

Constant vigilance is needed to detect people in need of HED therapy as well as to detect people not needing it. Students or school employees all require psychological guidance, intervention, and support to manage emotions at the workplace and in relationships.


Starting puberty is a life-changing time in many ways. Among the biggest issues is emotional dysregulation of many young adults. Emotional disorders such as depression, anger, anxiety, and increased risk of suicide are characteristics of individuals who develop mental health issues in the teen years. Parents, of course, have a greater interest in their children’s emotional development when they become adolescents and remain in this stage of their lives.


Educators are tasked with creating environments for emotional expression and learning across the learning continuum. Teachers can be considered the primary place for creating an environment that supports HED development in students. In my view, schools are the ideal learning environment where students learn to use HED for efficient and effective communication, communication skills, cooperation, teamwork, and the ability to get along with other people. Educators must provide opportunities for students to share their emotions, experiences, and feelings in an atmosphere of caring and understanding. They also need to understand and address issues of aggression and bullying, which are common among some children and adolescents.
