The digital divide between your traditional job and an online learning system can be nearly insurmountable. If you’re just now dipping your toe into the online learning pool, then you might find the potential benefits quite attractive. That being said, the newly adopted American College and University System Act represents the latest push to try and bring traditional colleges and universities and small business programs into the digital age, and it’s cause for concern for traditional business leaders.

More and more of us are toying with the idea of a degree without the hassle or expense of a campus-based classroom, and many of us are happily taking the plunge online. However, it’s important to keep in mind that not all online programs offer degrees. Some companies are only extending their existing degree programs to the Web, and even then, the degree itself is only “on-demand.” So while a few courses can likely be picked up at your local library, your LinkedIn profile, and Facebook page, to truly get your foot in the online education door, there are a few programs that must first be completed to get you a good grip on what a degree can really offer.

Here are just a few tips to help you, as a newbie to online degrees, know which programs will successfully provide you with a unique title and meaningful resume highlight.

Companies looking for talent will be looking for companies that offer degrees. So they can’t turn away an employee with an online program. While some websites and schools offer only a Bachelor’s degree, taking the time to complete both Online and program offers even more knowledge and skills necessary to make a strong first impression in the job market. If a company has a Higher Education Group placement specialist on staff, that will make it easier for you to choose a higher degree than just your Bachelor’s degree, especially if that placement specialist knows you well and has a good understanding of what it means to already have experience in the field.

In order to further your job search, you will have to be able to show off your degree on a resume, no matter where it came from.

Each program has an A+ rating on U.S. News & World Report’s website, and provides only a very loose definition of a degree on their website. In their site’s description of the program, they provide essentially a 1.0 letter grade. That means the program is impressive, but it’s no guarantee that it will pass the eyes of job recruiters looking for employees who need a lot of experiences and knowledge.

Many companies only allow college degrees to be offered online. So even if you have worked in the field for a number of years, there’s no guarantee that your degree will be valid if you pass the program without ever having met in-person face-to-face. However, there are a few companies, such as Limelight Networks, where job applicants must present a Master’s level degree, in addition to their previous experience and work experience.

Work experience from previous jobs is an essential part of any resume and every company is looking for someone with a strong work ethic. But while some companies may be loathe to look for certain candidates with clean resumes, they will look at the resume length, and not at the in-person experience. A few companies, such as Guidewire and IBM, ask applicants to submit a work history, with scores based on the length of experience, the kind of experience, and whether or not that work experience has been positive or negative. Just because you completed a degree and a Master’s degree online doesn’t mean that it won’t stand out on your resume. After all, in some fields you might have gone back and gotten your Master’s degree and started college.

Being able to say you have a skill and experience that no one else does really separates you from the rest of the pack.
