Despite the robust competition for young minds, education software market will likely grow, according to analysts with Creandum, the venture capital firm that was an early investor in Blippar, an augmented reality brand.
They predict the market will experience explosive growth, hitting US$1.9 billion this year and topping US$4.2 billion by 2022. An increase in learner engagement through the ability to connect with other students and the potential to overcome economic barriers are just some of the incentives to keep an eye on.
The school’s online “campus” may work for companies, but is not necessarily optimal for students, says Donald Hopkins, a professor at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Hopkins knows from experience.
In 2011, he started Morgan State University’s online course-learnings portal, Internet Degree Degree Online. In the first year, he graduated 22 students. Now, a new online “campus” has been created and more than 200 students are enrolled.
“We’re still expanding,” he said. “We want to make sure that the course has all the benefits of a campus. It’s no more than a print grade book.”
The new Morgan State University portal is part of a larger trend. According to Vice, U.S. colleges have spent US$168 billion acquiring online courses and online degree programs to meet the demand for career-specific schooling.
There are some challenges ahead for technology advocates hoping to harness the power of online learning technology to its fullest, Hopkins says.
“People don’t know how to get online,” he said. “It’s difficult. There’s so much baggage. Just because we now have the technology, we still need to know how to use it.”
A good way to start is with a medium created specifically for education. For example, if a company has a product or service they offer online, Hopkins suggests approaching digital “front-end design” groups to create a creative website.
“They can make sure we get our ads out front and center,” he said. “They have a huge audience that has already identified themselves as potential students who will look at our website to enroll.”
He recommends “holding over” this design so learners can go back to it for future coursework. This means a student learning Spanish for example could “go back to the content” and explore it further.
