What Types Of Online Learning Experiences Are Available?

Recently, teachers across the country have been dealing with a new challenge – how to guide students to take the online course available to them and help them implement it effectively.

Some traditional school districts are opting to either ditch the traditional way of teaching their children online, or are replacing it with a hybrid approach. Others are trying out multiple learning environments which range from online to blended learning to studio based.

Below are several key characteristics of each type of model. It is important to recognize when a program is differentiated.

Traditional Online Schools: Courses Meet Specific Needs of the Students. In this model the teacher guides the classes to the specific content needed for the class and delivers the class to the student. There is no isolated location, only individual classroom environments for each student.

The virtual environment is controlled centrally by the teacher to serve the needs of the students. When a student logs in and the teacher makes the appropriate course content available to the student, the student can take it at his or her leisure.

There is no tuition charged to the students for the instruction – they pay through the funding they receive for each class taken. The idea is that the cost of online education is equitable with that of an in-person class. To run an online school like the schools below, a foundation is needed to do a deep analysis of the students (child) so that a plan can be developed and implemented. This is done by tracking each child’s activities, grades, and interests so that the purpose of the online course can be properly driven through.

A school cannot operate without an authentic teacher-student relationship. It needs one who gets to know the child, and uses the many learning styles and interests out there. The type of digital curriculum may be the best match, as opposed to the students themselves who may learn from a one-size-fits-all approach. After an initial exploration, a school and/or district may create a teacher/student advisory team to lead the whole learning experience.

Passive Online Schools: More Resources Than You Can Shake A Stick At. This model is a subset of the traditional online school and is more generally called a hybrid. The teacher can say any words she wants to and the teacher has the unfettered freedom to introduce a variety of content for the students to absorb and develop over time. These hybrid programs use online learning as a tool to fulfill the needs of the program. The teacher establishes her teaching style to encourage and engage the students with active learning with multiple opportunities to learn from one another. These teachers teach in a way that makes the content relevant and compelling enough to stay student-focused.

The teachers’ job is to use the students’ common interests and learning styles to guide and lead the learning process, such as in a sketching class where art is used. Children need different skills in different settings and they need to have access to content that matches their own development. Some teachers have incorporated videos and other interactive resources to teach their courses. Teachers with these models use individualized learning plans that allow each student to follow a tailored curriculum that utilizes the attributes of the platform, such as its technology features.

Degree/Certification Tests to Land The Job

Traditional Online Schools: Students Receive Curriculum and Instruction Only. There is a continuous supply of content and resources for the students. Kids simply need to pick up the iPad and log in to their classroom. The teacher must establish the schedule for the course so the teacher is not teaching during class time and serves as the school supervisor so students know the rules and expectations of class time. There is no fee paid to anyone for the content or for the instruction.
