What Types Of Online Learning Are Available?

What type of virtual education are you going to be using in the future?

The following article is provided by MarketFoolery.

What is Online Learning? Is it a feature of your school? Is it a school business? Is it real time? Is it a distance learning opportunity?

What type of online learning is available? Typically, an educator would be able to say based on the definition of the term that the program is an online course.

What type of online course are you offered? One would make the distinction of “online” by the course name. In many cases, a professor or other faculty will be teaching an online course. In others, the requirements are different.

Class in progress – So a class might be in progress the entire semester? What if a professor has to go back into the classroom and lead a new class in session? Can students continue from an earlier class? No! Students need to maintain a current membership in a class if they want to receive credits for that class.

Alumni Link – Classes where the course features an online community of course visitors like alumni were created to allow students to connect with one another in a more private way as opposed to a public community where you would just share time in the classroom.

In class or face to face? The expectation for students for their level and interest level would be that they would want to be in the classroom, but if they opt for face to face, they will need the minimum credit standard to receive the degree.

On-line and off – If a course requires on-line support, that would be on-line for the students. The idea of course being in on-line environment, but being offered in some sort of on-line delivery method with live discussion is also not uncommon.

Should I hold that certificate? What will I be able to do with it? The basic certification that is offered in most programs is a CE (certificate in higher education). The stipulation is that it is a standard looking piece of paper that provides documentation of credentials that give some sort of assurance that an organization is reputable. With CE programs, the most significant advantage is in application. At the program level, this is somewhat a relevant check-off in the job search since the higher the degree, the more significant this is considered.

Should I get Certified Online – This will be for a more experienced group of prospective students who have chosen to go online, but in some cases, there are longer term courses that allow the student to get some added credits at the same time as receiving certification. I have seen it used in such courses as alternative medicine.

Course type – If a college program offers a specific type of courses, such as an honors college of which the certificate is available, that program may do so. Such as the University of Louisville’s Clarion program and the Flat Stanley. There is additional credit beyond what is traditionally received when applying for jobs with such an online component built in.

Evaluation process – Most programs offer at least online assessors as part of the process to review a piece of paper. These are usually faculty that have lived a part of the undergraduate life and can make a valid statement about the degree or course at hand.

There are sites such as NYU Conect for online students to look into and other such sites for students who are interested in crafting a story about their education.

The big picture – The benefits offered by the online education model can provide many benefits, such as the ability to earn credits that are almost as good as what would be gained by attending a state school, in-person courses for credit, and as technology moves forward, there will be an expectation for much less spending per student on post-secondary education. In many cases, online education can be the difference between having or not having a job, either permanently or temporarily.

Once in, students are more often getting more degrees and have a history and their sense of themselves reinforced by the program. When the student elects to eventually move into the classroom where the higher standards are at a state college level, they have the continued use of an online course and many of the same benefits they will get through the virtual educational experience.
