I remember for weeks after completing my SATs in high school I thought I was awful. It didn’t have anything to do with how the SAT’s worked, it wasn’t that the reading and math sections for my highest mathematics exam were too easy (sophomore year) or not enough. Not only did I take them in the best year I could possibly have, but I was also a little overworked. I remember my SATs as a confusing time in my life, where I thought I was a bad kid — and I wanted to forget it.
Honestly, it wasn’t until I was done with high school and I started reading fiction for a degree that I remembered how really anxious I was going into my sophomore year. My anxiety centered around my panic attacks and thoughts that I wouldn’t be able to handle one more moment in high school. Luckily, I got a job by a friend of mine, who was a therapist, in high school, and I started reading popular fiction novels and working on my novel. A few months in, I started journaling again because I was anxious, upset, and wrote about it often. These two different strategies led me down different paths to get better, but at the end of the day both worked for me.
Since then, I’ve learned there are multiple learning styles. My research with clued-in colleagues has shown that there are 30 different learning styles, each suited to a specific task, that can be utilized. These types of learning styles can have big benefits and can help individuals to excel at a whole variety of things. I’ve already used one of the learning styles, EST, in my studies and it’s helped me immensely.
Now that I’ve found the perfect “yes, I can do this” learning style — EST — it’s the perfect time to delve a little deeper into what exactly it means. What is EST? If you ask someone who doesn’t know about the popular list of skills, they will believe it’s a kind of speak-perfect verbal and written communication. In reality, EST means choosing between a multiple choice process or taking a relationship test. Like me, millions of people can speak on the record, but most people can’t know how they feel or what their inner voice says. The key to EST is self-knowledge and that is where the psychological skills are applied.
— An acronym for Emotional Control, a desire for well-being, and unity. Positive emotions, logic, logic, hard work, mental strength, calmness, smiling, and watching your back can be a hallmark of EST.
This person has a belief system of course, but their perspective often comes from reality and reality-based beliefs are different from beliefs that come from an understanding of objective facts. Mindful, restrained, sensitive and compassionate, this person is aware of their emotions but takes it seriously.
— Meaningful partnership, care, depth, commitment, and the people they care about. This person has a backbone and a strong belief system. They are in a good relationship with themselves and others.
They are resilient and strong, but won’t take advantage of you. Your life really matters to them and they don’t take themselves and their peers lightly.
— I’ll follow you, but it’s really me that you see. This person has your best interests in mind, but it’s OK to have interests that don’t fit in. This person could also come up with entirely new ideas. A best friend type of person, this person doesn’t need to constantly compare themselves to others.
This person has a good, fair outlook on life and tries to live for now instead of focusing on the future. This person can take care of them themselves because they are confident.
