What Is Instructional Design For Online Learning

Teaching your children to read is probably the most important task you can do as a parent. Thankfully, teaching children how to do that can be done on the computer too.

Internet-delivered education is a very real and fast-growing phenomenon right now. The top ten MOOCs cost over $20,000 each, and a Cunard study showed students spend four hours per day consuming MOOC material. The good news is, lower-cost alternatives exist for higher education as well. “Electronic learning is on the rise, and while the earlier versions are aimed at the upper-middle income and upper-class student, much lower-cost alternatives are beginning to surface for early-career learners,” according to Tom Dixon, professor of mechanical engineering at Rutgers University. According to Edmodo, a leading learning platform, 43 percent of students share and discuss skills content on the platform, and more than 40 percent increase the course hours they take because of the content.

A quick overview of the video tutorial process: to make an online course into an actual course, instruction design should start right from the start. When you become a student on the website, the user interface begins to speak to you, and you’re drawn in to the material (what teacher would have kept students from connecting with content?), which is helpful, since many things start to feel the same. The next step is to pick your focus area to start learning, and then you can add assignments to your list and follow them up. The same system that works well for education will work just as well for any online job-search site or interview. Once you start to take the materials and put them together, you have both a plan and a timeline.

Online courses are expensive and need to be funded somewhere. With instruction design, however, the approach is less vulnerable, as you’re applying those same principles online, too. Instruction will make students feel more confident, you’ll be teaching rather than waiting for students to learn, and students need to feel like they have individual control over their learning. “Students learn through sense and impulse as well as listening, and I think I can achieve that through instruction design,” says Dan Mattas, a lecturer of structural construction at Duquesne University.

In the future, more institutions will begin to outsource classroom teaching to online-learning platforms, where they offer an online-based education to students, which means customers will be able to exercise more control over their learning. Additionally, think of interactive design as teaching freeform content, rather than linear instructional design. Traditional, textbook-based instruction is more suitable for students at lower levels. The fast learning curve inherent in higher-level programs, which helps account for the large tuition cost of higher-level education, makes these more attractive for students in the upper-middle class. Education with a lower learning curve will be less expensive than traditional classes. You’ll no longer have to rely on schools to fund your education. Your tuition dollars will get to work in the e-learning industry.

Look for an experienced leader to oversee the design for your online learning program. Robert Dreyfuss, vice president of Research and Operations at the YouTube Channel for Research for Learning, suggests knowing who your executive team is going to be as you’re running your program.

Rather than contacting faculty members who are teaching core courses, developers should reach out to a lot of faculty, rather than a narrow group. Incorporating a variety of faculty members from across the board makes for a more dynamic class.

Think very carefully about what learning process you are setting up for your learner. Students will have a hard time with the basics of it. Dan Hull, lecturer of history and art at Yale University, says even he struggles to come up with words for what a typical online program will do. “It’s always a challenge for instructors,” he says. “For some people, a good online learning experience is trying to put a game plan together, but for others it’s about giving students the tools they need to find the information they need.”

Mattas thinks that the difficulty of coming up with the right format for online learning is just an example of the difficulty online education has in trying to figure out how to marry a learning experience and publishing platform like YouTube for its students.
