What Changes Are Made In Online Learning

What type of change should you expect when you take a course online?
First of all, there are no rules as to what is reasonable and what isn’t.

Whether the formalized online learning course is traditional classroom format or virtualized, future learning depends on a particular set of unique learning style and learning experiences. Most of the schools around the world which use the online education method have all found they are much happier with it. Only one school nationwide, Georgia Tech, has left its traditional classroom model in order to implement a new learning design system, in which the technology becomes a critical part of the solution.

Georgia Tech’s new learning system for degrees in two categories, the design of advanced degrees as a two-year major program called Interactive Learning Design (ILD) and the design of certificate programs for professional certifications, taught primarily online in 21 large lecture halls with 200-300 students. A more complete description of the program can be found in the Georgia Tech website.

To achieve success, the technology, called Technological Transformation Learning (TTL), has to be an important part of the solution. Technological Transformation Learning encompasses the entire learning process for all students.

Many colleges and universities are now taking the broad approach of using a series of lesson plans that replace one lecture with additional simulations and resources. For instance, here are some examples of online learning success stories, for which there are many, created at college.

Renaissance College , The Jesuit Catholic College in New York City, is like most Jesuit colleges. They run their college more like a small church than a school. There are many similar colleges and universities, such as Pepperdine University, DePauw University, Saint Rose, Loyola Marymount University, and several others. Some colleges have traditional classrooms, some have traditional lecture halls, some have online classes, some have huge lecture halls, and some have almost completely digital content.

However, many college administrations have their eyes on the change in higher education marketing and technology. For instance, Georgetown University , in collaboration with Kaplan Test Prep , new branding for their traditional two-year college, Georgetown. The idea is to create a new image to encourage potential students to attend their school.

In order to compete with on-line institutions, there needs to be a blended learning strategy as well. Coursera for instance offers many online classes, in which the entire learning experience is online, blended, or both.

Some colleges even offer online course courses for those unable to attend in person, whereas there are some who are completely online. Indeed, the White House wants the government to spend more on online learning.

Traditional online learning experience

Online learning, like other learning, is less about teaching than it is about engaging with the active learning moment. No matter the subject or the skill levels of the students, they learn best when they are asked to tackle problems and engaged in conversations with one another. This engagement is expressed through exercises and challenging discussions.

Most schools think of online learning as a problem-solving method. They are right. However, some online courses are designed by the instructor or by learning managers, who create content in either large lecture halls or with online equipment. The message is the same: the course is designed to help the students solve problems.

Offensive online classes tend to be self-evident-career help, health care, recruiting, training, dating, connecting with constituents and employers, and others. The online help module is helpful only for those who benefit from the online help in the near term, while those who need help have to wait a while for the students to learn to get going.

The online education instructor could go some distance in being offensive, if they put up a powerpoint on the first day to tell students that their IT skills are unskilled and you should take the online courses.

For now, the formal online learning approaches are something which has not yet become popular and influential enough to disrupt the college education system. However, the threat is clear. Colleges, especially those in the Catholic institutions, know that by the 2030s, universities in the US and around the world will all be online.
