Scholar: How Long Have Teaching And Learning Been Online

We all know that digital education is the future and that we should embrace the content that sits in our browsers and laptops.

Think about where most of the people that you use regularly on the internet are when you say today’s youth and how that might be different compared to your own youth in the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s. You probably weren’t using the internet in most cases at all. The things that the internet has delivered for your kids or people you know are things that were just not around at that time. How long have teaching and learning been online?

The last decade or so has witnessed a tremendous technological explosion with regards to learning. One of the key principles that one can study when searching through the various projects is to look at the difference in the internet in the early 2000’s and to look at how the digital divide is narrowing.

Today, a majority of the innovation and advancement has been in the middle to upper socioeconomic bracket. An example can be seen on Figure 1, which shows just how much of an opportunity the internet gave to the middle and upper echelon market.

Consider these recent changes:

July 2018: Apple Inc. (AAPL) announces that it will no longer charge students using a college credit card. Currently the only way that college students can access Apple products is on a separate, approved account.

My observation is that over the last 10 years, online education and technology have taken off. There are situations where you may not use the internet for education or how you teach and learning online. There are also some circumstances where distance learning, on college campuses, as well as vocational education may be an option.

What I want to share with you is an example of one such example that probably would not be used in most of my population. The FRC is a career transition assistance non-profit organization which has reached out to hundreds of thousands of Americans across the country. The mission of the organization is to provide education and employment to individuals as a result of their career transitions.

Something that I have seen are a lot of occasions of individuals that have reached out to the FRC seeking help and the FRC, as a result, utilizes online resources to reach and mentor individuals who may not be able to go to a classroom or a workshop. To see how this same program is used with the world of business is fascinating. What if someone has a dream of becoming a CFO? They can pick the computer up, check out a webinar that the FRC has partnered with Get Schooled or, if they choose, they can work through online education, work with FRC consultants, or get advice from FRC employees.

The FRC is just one example where you will find non-traditional demographics being served online. It is important that organizations should consider non-traditional demographics as they further their mission.

This article is merely intended as a look at how the internet has made it easier to educate or enable more opportunity for the education and workforce. Keep those stories coming in!
