The Five Reasons Porn Reduces the Loneliness of College Lovers

Teenagers using online pornography have been expressing some pretty surprising preferences and concerns, according to a recent report by the New York Times. The Times spoke with sex educators, statisticians, sociologists, porn consumers, parents and young people across the country for their reports on what they have learned over the years about the porn they encounter online and how it is affecting their lives. Check out the five topics that stand out the most from their findings, below.

1. Porn “normalizes” violence.

If you are going to watch porn for the first time, your environment usually plays a big role in how you are going to feel about it. One example cited is when a boy feels like he isn’t being treated fairly or seen as a “whale” in the way that a woman in porn is. Because porn can normalize violence, people could be desensitized to, or be turned off by, violent acts against women, said Dr. Karin Roe-Davies, a sex educator and psychologist.

2. Porn makes sex seem more threatening.

Intimacy in actuality feels like a “two-step dance” to most teenagers, because they don’t know what it is like to be intimate in real life, said Dr. Tamara D. Thompson, an associate professor of psychology at Biola University who specialises in sex and relationships. While being intimate doesn’t feel threatening to most people, being someone else online does make sex feel like a risky activity, she said.

3. Porn Makes sex feel more difficult.

While some young people were using porn to develop relationships with men, others described how porn helped them realize that they need to work harder on learning to fulfill sex without cheating. An increasing number of teenagers said that, from the age of 13 or 14, they had experienced some kind of sexual tension, and one respondent explained that watching porn brought it to light. Now, they are learning to put themselves into the female character and that makes sex seem harder, she said.

4. Porn Is Important for Teens as Emotions of Friendship.

Some teenagers, when contemplating the importance of porn for them in college, said it is helping them develop experiences with people and develop relationships, and being less lonely. Because even though watching porn is hard, it can “gauge emotional level of what you do to somebody,” said one respondent.

5. Teenagers Don’t Censor Porn.

Though some teen girls tell their parents that they don’t like watching porn because it makes them feel dirty, or it makes them feel guilty when watching, almost all the times they spoke to the New York Times it was said by teens who see themselves being in the roles of the people they are watching. “With Playboy, you’re like, man, I get the gig, I get paid, I’m wealthy,” said one teen girl. “You’re more of a prisoner or a terrorist when you’re watching on your computer.”
