Despite some lingering controversy around Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the automaker’s shares are up 37 percent in the past three months.

10 shares of Tesla stock would have been worth $31,000 by Oct. 1. If you’d invested $1000, that’s $37,000 more than you would have if you had just chosen a standard S&P 500 index fund on October 1. In less than a year, the stock is up almost 125 percent.

In other words, with Tesla, the share price roughly doubled every year for the past decade.

Though Tesla still has some critics, the automaker does have its supporters. One big fan is retired New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, who owns a personal electric car that he drives to Gillette Stadium three or four times a week. He revealed his $132,000 payment for the car after he won the $5 million Powerball prize in May of this year.

In other words, with Tesla, the share price roughly doubled every year for the past decade.

While many investors may be skeptical about the Palo Alto-based car company and its CEO, it’s worth noting that Wall Street seems to be increasingly impressed with Musk and his abilities, and the company has been steadily climbing the ranks of publicly-traded auto companies.

In the end, Tesla has proven that tech business models can become auto businesses. The rising success of Tesla and other tech companies like Lyft and Uber suggest that the age of Silicon Valley is on track to end up in another two decades of massive automotive success.
