Why a Statistical Model is Important for Quality Machine Learning

Eliminating a statistical model is like doing away with a concierge who can see things that others can’t.

When someone goes to a computer with a solution to a problem, like a Mechanical Turk user, he’s going to get a spreadsheet containing logic and variables. A statistical model can be used to gather the logic from these fields and deploy it on the data. Statisticians extract values from the data, analyze them, and yield a value you might use to score your output. Some field predictions are solid and you know you need to create a model that will produce the score you need. Others are below average and don’t do your task any justice.

You can go through the job of generating a statistical model along the below steps. You may need to iterate and adjust the structure in order to get a score you’re happy with.

Step 1: Simplify and Refine the R Option

If you have been using R and some versions are still available, then you probably know what’s happening. The same parameter matrix you used to generate an R option will be the same for a R statistical model. All you do is add more values. If you don’t have access to a full R version then this can be very helpful to you. You can use individual entries of the original data, or pass on the settings from an earlier version that weren’t being used.

Step 2: Allocate the Data

Now you are ready to begin. You will need to define two conditions for your output. You can assign a risk score to the base case. Even without that, you can describe how the key parameters generate their probabilities (type of odds). These factors can be put in the raw data or into parameters. Each of these parameters will be used to score the output. This same mechanism can be used to assign weights to the parameters and choose whether to wait to score the output until the first bar or immediately. This is a way to assess which parameters to release first.

Once you have started setting parameters, you’ll need to create some data warehouses and set up the variables so they will be generated consistently. When you have that squared away, and you can identify all the variables that you need to set up, you can construct a statistical model.

Step 3: Calculate the Score

Now you are ready to build your output with your system. Just like you would do if you were doing a Preference Adjustment, here you’ll need to perform some quality check to ensure you are working with good data. Only a heavy statistical or deep learning system can produce a good approximation of an expected value from a pre-existing product or service. For example, you may need to generate estimates from your registry or website. You don’t need to go hunting for additional information to bring your estimates down. Most of the time, it’s only as easy as creating your estimates, taking them offline, reviewing them, and iterating.

The resources you should use are deep learning, Sentient, or NinjaGears. Once you have trained your model, you should go and test it in light applications. There are many good options out there. Feel free to use this exercise to find the right solution to your problem. You won’t know until you’ve tried.
