How to Use a Temp Agency to Find a Job

People often work temp jobs just to get experience. While this practice can be effective for other careers, using temporary employment agency as a paycheck in your job search can also come with some drawbacks. Here are three reasons to find a temp agency before you look for a full-time job.

1. Short Training Periods Will Cost You

When you find a temporary job, you often hear about six- to 12-month training periods that you are required to complete. This is a good time to begin your interview process, so if you’re unsure about being an employee in a place, or trying to find a new one, this is the time to weigh your options. If you find a temp job that seems like a temporary situation, what are the risks? With a temp agency, you’ll get very limited training opportunities and access to employer-approved training opportunities. Being a temp at your full-time job can often put you at a disadvantage, especially with more advanced skills and differentiating yourself.

2. You May Have to Do It on Your Own

A temp agency can work in your favor, but it’s up to you to be successful. With a temp agency, you may not have access to mentorship, technical support, or training opportunities. Some agencies require high levels of payment upfront and some won’t work with those with low to no credit scores. A temp agency can sometimes cost more than a full-time job. It may seem better to get experience through the temp agency, but in the long run, it may not help you to find a full-time job.

3. Security Checks Are Only An Afterthought

With staffing agencies, security checks are a given. With this way, workers are screened with an entry exam and background check. However, if you don’t submit your answer to those, or go beyond what is required, you are almost guaranteed to be rejected. In today’s digital world, it’s nearly impossible to hide from potential employers. On top of that, you could be subject to having your social media accounts checked at the request of your manager. Being an unpaid intern or gig economy worker can be an alarming option for many job seekers, who fear losing their only source of income. Those companies, however, are unable to administer mandatory background checks.

A job application is just the beginning of the search process. People often search online for other questions, an interview is often just the second. These organizations are hiring and may look at ways to pay their workers without relying on them. If you’re giving up two years in wages to join a temp agency, you’re putting yourself at great risk of economic loss.

One of the best things to do in the search for a job is to apply to all jobs that seem interesting, even if you don’t think you’ll get hired. In fact, some temporary positions may be better than a full-time job, depending on what you’re looking for. There are jobs out there, even for those without a college degree, and you just have to know where to look.
