How to Disable LTE on iPhone (and Why You Might Want To)

Apple has made a big announcement about a new handset. But they’re also unleashing an update to their user to better protect them in dangerous situations.

How to Disable LTE on iPhone (and Why You Might Want To)

What is LTE?

There are two types of cellular networks known as cell towers and networks like LTE. These two are different, but a lot of people have a hard time keeping track of them. Here’s a helpful explainer on how they work:

Cell towers are widely used, but it still makes sense to switch to a network like LTE if you aren’t always connected to one of them.

What is a cell tower?

Cell towers give you a reception in a larger radius than a typical cell tower. You might be in your car, using a WiFi hotspot on your laptop at work, and the network will still be able to connect to you even if there is an LTE cell tower around you that can’t pull in the same signal.

Another type of cell tower is a base station, which gives the signal you would get from a traditional cell tower.

What is an LTE cell tower?

An LTE cell tower typically transmits signals over a broader range, not in a circle like a normal cell tower. It is also known as a carrier switch, like Verizon’s and AT&T’s internal bands.

What Is a cell tower you might have heard of before?

Generally speaking, cell towers are located on poles or some kind of equipment that can be seen in the distance. You will also see them as your phone is being switched from one network to another. These usually work better on some network but don’t offer as many options and can be a little more confusing. A cell tower, on the other hand, can be very well hidden.

It is also important to keep in mind that a cell tower can actually be installed into an area that is not necessarily cleared for cell towers. If one is being installed, it could be considered an “illegal” cell tower, like having a stand of electric power poles in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

Why Did You Use a Cell Tower?

Ideally, your phone should get a SIM card installed in it to make it more difficult to swap. However, using one means you will lose the ability to switch between networks, so why would you want to bother?

Now, it might be reasonable to use your phone as much as possible, but it’s not always necessary. Sometimes there are times where it is better to use just one network (or WiFi), and LTE phones are great at this. Once you’ve downloaded Android Redstone 5 and have it on it, there’s a good chance you will have the most ideal wireless experience.

Now that you have gotten your cell tower, you have done your job for a little while. One of the best ways to know if you should disable your iPhone’s network is to disable the feature you installed while using it. The iPhone will usually simply ask you if you want to save your private information and show you what a different network looks like.

Disabling your iPhone’s WiFi network is often much easier than disabling your carrier switch, although it might take a little bit of work. If you can accomplish it, you have saved yourself from having to use one of the most important websites you will see in a few months.
