How Reliable Are Online Learning Management Systems

Online learning managers are popular when it comes to taking a college class. They’re great tools, especially when you’re planning to upgrade to the next level.

Rigorous studies prove that most online learning programs are heavily oversold to learners and educators. Such services are not what they seem. Read on to find out why.

Online learning is the fastest growing segment of higher education. As schools adjust to the new paradigm of college admissions, and their expenditures increase, more and more students are taking courses over the Internet. Such a pace is putting increased pressures on schools to perfect online course offerings.

These programs are competitive in nature. Impressivity is essential in today’s world. One fails to stand out from the pack without a stunning demo of something like a Facebook profile, a catchy Snapchat, or a SoundCloud track. Programs are hoping that online learning might just turn into a lucrative industry — one that almost no one is currently participating in.

The reason this isn’t happening yet is due to two factors. First, most university systems are lacking the vision and initiative to develop good-enough, quality software. Only if you don’t have a serious advantage — other than your network influence — will you be able to bring an innovative product to market. Furthermore, schools are low tech by nature. Online programs benefit from educational experience through word of mouth, which tends to be more effective than changing a bad program into a good one. The problem is that their change cycle is not fast enough, and as a result, they end up disappointing students and educators alike.

How to use Online Learning Management Systems (OLM)

You can only get so much out of an online program with functionalities you can throw together with your pinkie. That is why software companies develop tools with complex features that are difficult to integrate and use.

To develop a quality online course, the university needs to build both the iLMS (Instructor Training Workspace) and the ROM (Resource Library). Ideally, a university should build them both around the course content. With the iLMS, the university creates the curriculum with not only its own, but also the library’s resources. Because of this, the students can take the content with them when they move out of the university, and go anywhere they want without worrying about their archived course materials or their transcripts, and they can customize their assignments to their personal preferences.

The ROM, on the other hand, needs to be be heavily customized by the professor and the employer. Traditionally, it is used to coordinate and leverage student IDs and course data. In the current economy, it is used to have a centralized repository that can store any and all subject, practice or area of interest material. The ROM needs to be updated regularly with content, assignments, and problems that arise in the course and from staff members throughout the entire program. When this happens, the ROM becomes a powerful online resource to exploit.

Whether it is a university or a business, simply having an online course doesn’t make it a great one. Both the teacher and the student have to be engaged in the process to ensure a smooth course. Therefore, schools need iLMS and ROM alike, rather than just one of these. Fortunately, the transition is becoming more and more seamless, and is continuously increasing. Still, a few universities have figured it out and become very successful: Duke University, Duke Montessori, the Albert and Lee Loudermilk School, and Concordia University Chicago.

Final Thoughts

Online learning looks promising — but like most other trends, it is young and growing very rapidly. Despite this, there is no denying that universities can learn a lot from the application of quality IT products. Getting it right is going to be a tall order, and will be worth the wait.

Adaptations, especially on the iLMS, are going to be the secret to the future of online learning. At that point, students will be able to enjoy an immensely superior program and the current IT industry will have continued opportunities to make the transition even smoother and more successful.
