How Should a teacher accommodate my immigration status? My immigration status, Spanish skills, and self esteem are important to me.

My English professor, Mr. Fishenden, has a very interesting lesson for us. We all study hard and the final scores are posted every semester. In that class we took math with lot of time, but just before lunch, he called out: “So what else do you have? What else do you do?” We all looked at each other and from memory, I remembered that I studied dance. There was an uproar. We were throwing up fists in the air and yelling at the top of our lungs. My friend, Ms. Bridges just yelled out “What?” We all laughed and I think she said she studied social dance. So that leaves me with an end after someone said that I study sports journalism.

It’s a great question, actually, which I happen to think about quite a bit. Well first of all, I would never have believed that a kid my age is studying sports journalism. There must be some discrepancy somewhere. I mean I grew up in a huge city and there are a whole slew of options to choose from, so what does that tell us? Maybe we want to know if journalism is something to aspire to? We should all be looking into this, especially for those still in university.

There are many online places where students can get their or their parents or teachers’ classes or have them verified. Just search the name of your particular subject: U journalism, sci math, i g maths, social dance, or english. These seem to be some of the biggest online applications, and also ones that have a large variety of courses. These applications (by my understanding) all tell you if you already have your main certificate, if you have your secondary certificates in place, and whether you have to pass an exam before you start the full course.

But what happens if you do not have the requirements?

You can request an International Semester grant. This allows you to begin class in January when school is just starting, and finish your course in June when the school system stops.

You can access one of the universities’ online courses, allowing you to read lectures and watch videos, without having to pay. Schools may restrict you to a certain class, so this option can be useful.

As far as the particular topics go, universities do offer bachelor’s degrees in these areas at a fraction of the cost of what they would pay in real life. Plus, online education enables a wider range of students, who may have difficulties taking a class live with everyone around the room. It’s almost like you can watch a TV show but still be part of the discussion. That brings up the question about online classes. Does the online medium change the teacher in any way? The answer is, I think it changes them in small ways, like often they get multiple students who do not all hold the same ideas, so they’re having more conversations than they would in real life. At the same time, they may be less inhibited, and this can be valuable, especially to the teacher who wants to not lose out on feedback. Even though online classrooms are not necessarily equal, some professors do find success in having their own students who are only hours away. Not everyone finds this to be useful, however.

One of the biggest concerns people have is the security aspect of online classes. I don’t like to use the term “tracking” which could easily come from a technology background, but a lot of people are concerned about online credentials. These can be lost, stolen, or misplaced. I personally do not like the idea of a smartphone ringing at a certain time and my phone saying “This is John in my textbook and I got your email password” so this is something that I can’t control.

Just remember that you can switch your classes back and forth between campus and online. I plan on doing just that this year! This way, if I decide to move for work, I can seamlessly stay in the same class no matter where I am.
