How Can Online Learning Be Improved

As online learning becomes more common in colleges and universities, it is important that students with knowledge of their problems are not only educated about the needs of their courses but that they can also find information they need to solve their problems.

Social media and television consumption has soared over the past three decades. While TV has stayed static, the rise of the internet and the constant flow of information has made access to information an open-source endeavour.

Today, thousands of online outlets offer their services, all with varying degrees of success. Some, like Cvent, only empower their clients to sell locally, while others use free marketplace tools and let users choose what types of content they wish to receive. Still others, like Zendesk, automatically route all sales to the best match for both buyers and sellers.

While there are many different models, software as a service is not really a viable option for most—especially not for everyday users. This is because online tools can be slow, usually require users to download or pay for updates, and are expensive. That’s why tools like Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop have been the best and most reliable options for so long.

But even as software as a service has improved, the problem with online learning has only gotten worse. Unless you are using truly dedicated online universities, most online learning tools operate in the background—doing the minimum necessary to ensure that online students don’t feel at a disadvantage.

Because these courses were developed by talented individuals for specialized professionals, they offer a fairly solid level of service.

That’s not to say every online learning tool is built for professionals. For the average user, the older, free channel services have become a nightmare. Some of these sites can be expensive to use and slow to update. When a site becomes unavailable, users lose an entire semester, career or life opportunity.

This is a problem that has been going on for years. And while there are some good online learning tools, finding the top tier is rare. On the other hand, there are people all over the world with the talent and passion to teach.

The wild success of online universities can be attributed to a couple of things: The first is that online universities can actually teach. The biggest issue with existing online universities is that the administrative work is mostly done by the instructor or anyone else and the only benefit is access to content.

The second thing is that they are actually cheap. All online universities in the world have a goal: To make education accessible for everyone. And even the most basic online programs that don’t have any real teaching and training strategies can work in a pinch.

Lastly, online education is available to anyone who has internet access. If a computer user doesn’t know how to use a mouse, a webcam, or Photoshop, there is an online solution to make learning something that matters to them enjoyable.

These days, it’s essential to embrace the next big trend—the here and now. Already, online learning has reached an incredible state of social power, technology, and consistency. But with 30 percent of employees reporting that they struggle to find suitable online learning tools, the problem of how to make online learning work has only gotten bigger.

We must go beyond educating the masses to making online learning accessible to professionals. Entrepreneurs have been the drivers of every previous new trend, but we have fallen short in this one.

The forces of progress have reached a level where the average user can be put at ease. From now on, we must create the tools that will make online learning the best experience possible. Doing so is a step toward economic prosperity and a personal boost for employees.
