Countries with wealth and tradition, like Canada and the United States, lag behind those with lower per capita incomes like India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
“Education doesn’t develop countries, individuals develop countries,” said Richard Lettcher, author of A Path to Opportunity: The Middle Class’ Future in Digital India, according to India Life Education.
Online learning should develop people, not economies – but the high cost of formal education often restricts access.
Students in lower- and middle-income countries are also typically far from high-tech centres. To help bridge this gap, global leading brands have launched accessible, digital and scalable platforms that provide students with access to high-quality, adaptive coursework.
An important component of the online learning process is teacher-centered, wherein teachers and instructors design courses that focus on real-world problems. “This is especially true of education in countries where quality of education is a big concern and a major barrier,” said Kira-Jean Fudge, an expert in the higher education systems of emerging markets at EDUCAUSE.
The online learning process in South America is built on the premise that students need to be better equipped to enter the workforce. Deloitte predicts that the number of people in South America who will have a job in the year 2027 will increase by four million, and an additional 15 million people who will be self-employed.
Hospitals and colleges in Latin America are incorporating online learning in their strategy to provide students with better training and job prospects.
Learning online can also be an effective way for people to solve real-world problems and form organizations, thereby mitigating the risk of mass unemployment.
Another trend in online learning is the integration of social platforms. Social networking and virtual communities can become valuable learning tools for universities and colleges.
“Colleges and universities find that they can connect with prospective students online and it is a great way to reach out to them on what can be a very expensive process,” according to the International University Association.
“Online learning is booming in India. In schools and colleges, students increasingly enjoy using their smartphones and tablets to connect to their classmates. Such platforms will definitely be an essential part of the learning culture in future,” said Delhi University.
Every modern university is evolving to appeal to the most diverse set of students.
“I think we need to be looking at digital and interactive learning with the expectation that there will be an increase in overall global access to higher education,” said Dr. Jeramie Fernandez, an expert in global higher education at the UCLA Higher Education Institute.
The importance of natural selection
Learning online should be measured against an anticipated shift in human behaviour. Learning on a college campus or digital platform should not be affected by changes in the environment, economies, demographics or information on the Internet.
“New human learning styles should be determined through natural selection over time, but until such time, it is sufficient to model learning based on an anticipated combination of both personal characteristics and societal environment,” said Jean-Charles Salmon, Head of Innovation and Learning at Bangkok Development Institute.
