Computer Programming Learning How To Apply Gamification On Online Courses

GAMING used to be a puzzle many of us would play in black and white, but recently, the industry has been developing so much that concepts like “cross-promotion” and “gamification” are very much becoming known. When I first started blogging, and began talking about my hobbies, finding grants, and fund-raising for my teaching, someone else would come up and ask me, “Who do you use for funds and grants?

It is a given that a computer programmer needs to be technically competent and know how to use the latest programming languages. These are skills that take several years and even more money to perfect, but what many students don’t realize is that success in these fields requires at least some understanding of gaming and games. Traditional courses in coding and computer science don’t always appeal to students who have a soft spot for video games.

Gamification is a game-like environment that combines the challenges found in traditional video games with an incentive to learn or to improve one’s skills. The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) recognized this skill set and has created a set of games that will help computer programmers better understand modern computer systems.

Gamification in Code

The idea of learning through game-based learning was first developed in the mid-1980s by software developers including LucasArts, which was acquired by Microsoft. During the 1980s and 1990s, various commercial video games were created using sophisticated and long-term computer-programming programs that they used to test their programming. The more complex the games got, the less original they became.

Today, there are thousands of programs used in the actual gaming industry, and players rely heavily on these programs for performance improvement. For example, the Player Engagement Program that is used in NBA 2K is a combination of competitive play and monetary rewards. By simulating the technology systems utilized by NBA 2K, students will gain a better understanding of how the gameplay happens and be able to understand the challenges of using game-based learning.

Many teachers have recently started to teach their students about gamification techniques. If teachers are already using video games in the classroom, a gamification approach to learning would be an excellent way to integrate these ideas into their teaching.

Gamification Is A Learning Tool

Gamification can be implemented in a variety of ways. In the classroom, schools can use a game-based approach to getting students interested in learning programming languages. One of the best ways to do this is by using active learning experiences. Active learning is a practice that demands that students consider what they are being told as their answers to questions, and must examine whether their answers are correct or not.

For students who want to get a more in-depth understanding of programming, interactive videos can be used to generate game situations that test and highlight abilities, both technical and non-technical. Students can use problem solving exercises and other activities that lead them to a more analytical and critical approach to problem solving and insight into how computers work.

Gamification Can Replace Other Learning Ways

Another benefit of utilizing a gamification approach to learning is that teachers are now free to use it as an alternative to other methods of teaching. At the undergraduate level, the use of online games and educational websites has dramatically increased, and the popularity of games has grown in general.

Today, students can use games to teach themselves more about their surroundings and apply this knowledge to solving real-world problems. For example, students can learn more about geology by playing Minecraft, and students can learn how to leverage databases by playing poker games. Students can even learn about the physics of cars by playing Monument Valley, and they can improve their writing skills by playing Professor Layton.

By using games as a learning tool in the classroom, teachers are able to take advantage of many students’ love of games and develop an interest in computer science without having to pay for expensive learning materials and software. Parents and educators can also use these games as a teaching aid without jeopardizing their own computer skills.
