Remember when it was a “new paradigm” of coaching with dynamically “flexible” hours? So much so, I would say that if there is anything that we are seeing in life today, it is the onset of a completely new paradigm (1) , with an optimistic view to the rest of life. Being in a work/life balance has never been more important. And, with the advent of technology, modern professionals find that trying to add new professional obligations is proving extremely challenging. So if we take a good look at our work experience, we find that developing skills such as problem solving, building relationships, providing leadership and managing time is all time consuming. And, then, there is the unavoidable reality that most of us spend over 1.3 million hours (IMPD) working each year.

For many, this is where the digital agenda enters the equation. Digitally delivered education and training can now provide customized content and assessments with flexible hours to align with personal preferences, and was a factor in helping me to decide to visit Northern College Dublin – when I saw the hyper easy access, well-executed digital experience, almost limitless social opportunities, flexible scheduling, amongst many other positive attributes, I was hooked and immediately signed up.

Before I go further, it should be made clear that I’m not endorsing this experience as a replacement for traditional learning in any way. What this platform allowed me to do was hone a set of competencies that I needed to establish to develop my skills towards a range of new opportunities.

In terms of “learning”, what you see is different from what you usually experience, or what you were actually taught in university. Instead of lecturing, the content is dynamic, its delivered to you and shown to you, and its packaged in a way that allows you to refer to the course content in any time frame for any purpose without having to resend any relevant content or a learning assessment. And, with the ease with which you can access the digital system it allows you to do your work even in rush hour traffic. So you have the opportunity to not just learn, but make a difference in your professional life. And, just to try and turn it into a dirty word, you have access to video, audio, presentations and even quizzes that demonstrate what you are learning and how you are performing in those spaces. By the way, in terms of how I feel about this “learning experience”, I have to say I really do feel like I’m on cloud nine, I’m really quite positive about the future of learning in general.

A digital learning experience with eight different sessions, seven different environments, aligned in a way that supports all the layers of the training and by the way ensures you are learning and improving, as you would expect, you can take it with you whenever you want with the option to finish it off remotely. And, in the event that you are unable to access the “learning platform” and part of your learning needs to be completed in person, you have the option to pick up where you left off or upgrade to get your digital homework. I must say, I have found this experience to be the future of education, because no longer is it just for academics and research scholars. Like so many other skills, learning and excellence has become more and more transferable in professional settings.

So, in summary, if I were you, I’d find a way to make use of this learning platform if you are not already. And, in the same spirit as I’ve just described, if I were you I’d seek out other platforms (i.e. LinkedIn) for you to give them a try. The smart kid among us is going to find something that suits your needs.
